Doctoral Candidate in Energy System Analysis (Espoo, Finland)

The position belongs to the Aalto career system and the selected person will be appointed for a two-year fixed term appointment with an option for a two-year renewal given a successful completion of a mid-term review.

We are looking for a PhD student for the Nordic Flagship project “Flexible Nordic Energy Systems (Flex4RES)” (http://www.nordicenergy.org/flagship/flex4res/) and Strategic Research Council project “Creative adaptation of wicked socio-environmental disruptions (WISE)” (http://wiseproject.fi/en/).

The overall aim of the PhD project is to develop sustainable and resilient energy systems for the future under different uncertainties. The work would start with macro-scale energy system analysis and optimization under uncertainties to create a sustainable energy pathway for Nordic and Baltic countries till 2050. This would follow with more detailed work on (technological, economic, political, and environmental) risk scenarios and resilience analysis of energy and technological systems. The doctoral student would work in collaboration with the research group in building a model to analyze the energy system resilience and the operation of energy systems under unusual conditions. This requires data gathering as well as actual coding work, and later on the model is used to do the actual analyses. The target is to understand how the robustness of energy systems can be improved against socio-technical and environmental disruptions.

The work includes energy systems modeling and data analysis, but has a strong multidisciplinary connection to environmental, social and political sciences. Cooperation within WISE and Flex4RES projects is foreseen.

The work will be done at Department of Applied Physics of Aalto University School of Science in close collaboration with Nordic and Finnish partners under the guidance of Prof. Peter D Lund.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct research on energy systems with a multidisciplinary perspective
  • Develop energy system models based on the earlier work in the research group
  • Have a genuine interest in multidisciplinary issues and energy-related questions
  • Be able to work independently and take responsibility of the progress of her/his work
  • Closely collaborate with Nordic (Flex4RES) and Finnish (WISE) teams
  • Publish research outcomes in scientific peer-reviewed journals
  • Take part in teaching and/or other department duties according to the university guidelines
  • Be willing to travel and to attend international conferences and workshops

Qualifications

The candidate should have a M.Sc. from a relevant field. Good command of English is a necessary prerequisite. A successful applicant should have demonstrated scientific excellence and creativity, and good social skills. The candidate should have skills in modeling and analysis of technological systems; understanding of energy systems and risks. Experience in Matlab, or other programming languages is considered highly beneficial. Mathematical problem solving and systems analysis skills are also valued. A background in science, engineering, or economics is preferable, while experience in social, political, or environmental sciences is a plus.

Compensation, working hours and place of work

The salary for the position starts at 2 448 EUR. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of academic staff at Aalto University is 1 624 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus.
