Active Matter Group at Aalto University’s Department of Applied Physics is looking for a highly motivated doctoral candidate to work on magnetic trapping of active particles. The chosen doctoral candidate will develop new magnetic trapping techniques for both synthetic and biological active particles, and apply these techniques to studying single-particle and collective behaviour and phase transitions of active particles. This Academy of Finland –funded research position (https://tinyurl.com/ActiveTweezing)is especially suitable for doctoral candidates who are interested in carrying out and combining both experimental and theoretical work. The doctoral candidate will learn valuable skills, including magnetic tweezing, state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, image processing, data analysis, colloid chemistry/physics and cell culturing. The doctoral candidate will also be encouraged towards developing his/her own ideas during the 4-year long PhD term.
Requirements and qualifications
We are looking for highly motivated applicants with outstanding study records and Master’s degree in physics, applied physics, biophysics or another field that fits the project. Excellent command of English (both verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to disseminate scientific results are mandatory requirements for the position. Any previous background and experience in soft and active matter research or studies is considered as an advantage, but is not required. We greatly appreciate candidates who are able to work both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team on challenging and broad tasks. Applicant must be motivatedto conduct research at the highest international level, with the aim at completing the doctoral degree within 4 years.

Salary, working time and place
Salary will be based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The expected starting salary is around 2500 €/month (before taxes). The position is initially filled for 2 years, followed by a midterm progress review. In case of sufficient performance, the contract is continued for another 2 years after which the PhD work is expected to be completed. The position is located on Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus.
