Smart miniaturized systems in demanding applications from minimally invasive surgery to autonomous driving are based on sensing and actuation by micro- and nanoelectromechancial systems (MEMS/NEMS). While currently MEMS functional elements are made of silicon, the demand for new functionalities, low power consumption and higher integration density push utilization of new materials in MEMS. The research of Electronics Integration and Reliability group is focused on different new hybrid and multi-material concepts for MEMS and their implications on device performance, process integration, stress management and reliability.
Doctoral student position in Piezo-MEMS development for biomedical applications
Electronics Integration and Reliability group at Aalto University is looking for a Ph.D. candidate to develop new materials and advanced structures for efficient piezoactuation. The work is part of the ECSEL JU project POSITION-II “Towards the next generation of smart catheters and implants”. MEMS sensors and transducers are essential for smart catheters. They include blood pressure, contact force and body temperature sensors and, most important, MEMS ultrasonic transducers. Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (PMUT) are expected to replace traditional piezo ceramic transducers in 3D imaging. In the pan-European POSITION II project Aalto University has the goal to gain a good understanding of structural stability of different piezofilms and PMUT devices. The goal is to study how PZT, doped PZT, AlN and ScAlN thin films and material stacks behave under different temperature and moisture conditions and which microstructures and manufacturing flows lead to stable piezo films and reliable PMUT devices.
The appointment is available immediately. The position is fixed-term and filled initially for 1 year with an option for extension until the end of 4-year PhD studies. The salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University. Employment includes occupational health and social security benefits.
A candidate should have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in a suitable area (e.g. electrical engineering, micro/nanoelectronics, physics or materials science), or be a M.Sc. student in a final phase of his/her studies. The candidate should have strong analytical and writing skills, and experience or genuine interest on MEMS/NEMS and bioelectronics. Expertise in micro/nanofabrication processes and material characterization methods is valued. Fluency in English both written and spoken is a requirement.
Electronics Integration and Reliability group belongs to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. The group is located in Micronova (www.micronova.fi) and uses the cutting-edge infrastructure of OtaNano, established in 2013, providing centralized access to advanced nanofabrication, nanomicroscopy and low-noise measurement facilities. The group is also using different modeling tools to anticipate and rationalize reliability performance of heterogeneous integration in micro- and nanosystems.
