PhD student in nanopore confined resistive switches for neuro-morphic applications

Empa - the place where innovation starts
Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

The Laboratory for Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces has an opening for a

PhD student in nanopore confined resistive switches for neuro-morphic applications

While current CMOS technology is reaching the sub-10 nm regime, a broad consensus arises that a further boosting in computational power will primarily rely on novel circuit elements exhibiting an increased functional complexity, as well as on massively parallel, beyond-von Neumann architectures benefiting from an improved interconnectivity of their building blocks. Networks of two-terminal resistance change random access memory devices (ReRAMs) are outstanding candidates as such elements are expected to be scalable below 10 nm due to the filamentary nature of their resistive switching while also offering multi-bit operations via tunable analogue resistance states.
The objective of the project is to exploit the emergence of multiple timescales and tuneable resistance states in reduced dimensions to design novel building blocks with complex, reprogrammable functionalities for neural networks.
To address these aspects, the PhD student will utilize focused ion beam techniques to create nanopores of 2-10 nm in diameter in insulating membranes with thicknesses down to 5 nm. The nanopores will be deposited with various resistive switching media and contacted by metallic and/or graphene leads. The microscopic mechanisms involved in filamentary type resistive switching phenomena will be characterized by various electrical spectroscopy methods. The neuromorphic functionalities of the best performing material platforms and architectures will be tested in the time domain against multiple input signals and feedback protocols. Thus the devices will be trained to perform various decision making tasks autonomously.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with a background in physics and micro/nano fabrication, with a strong interest to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral) are mandatory.
The research is performed at the Laboratory for Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces. Fabrication tasks requiring lithographical methods will be done in the FIRST cleanroom facility of ETH Zurich. The work will be carried out under the joint supervision of Dr. Miklos Csontos, Dr. Ivan Shorubalko and Prof. Michel Calame. The position is funded for up to 4 years. Earliest possible starting date is September 1, 2018.
Empa offers a highly stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a broad interdisciplinary surrounding.

For further information about the position please contact Dr. Miklos Csontos Miklos.csontos@empa.ch or Dr. Ivan Shorubalko Ivan.shorubalko@empa.ch and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s405 and Empa-Video
We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas with transcripts and contact details of two referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
Empa, David Heusser, Human Resources, Ueberlandstrasse 129, 8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland.
