PhD student on Ultrasensitive quantum dot – field effect transistor photodetectors


This project aims to improve performance and affordability of infrared photodetectors by exploiting novel materials, alternative device concepts, and technologically comfortable fabrication methods. Combination of nanostructuring, colloidal quantum dots (QDs), and new 2-dimensional materials such as graphene lie in the heart of this project. One of the fundamental questions to answer is physical nature of charge transport through graphene/QDs interface. Photodetectors with extended spectral sensitivity to the range of 2-5 micrometers and with the individual detectors size of sub-quarter-wavelength are of the main challenges.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with a background in physics, material science, or electrical engineering. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral) are mandatory. Previous experience in electrical/optical characterization, analysis, modeling (LabView , Matlab, Python, Comsol), and micro/nano fabrication are advantageous.
 

The research will take place at the Laboratory for Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces in Dübendorf, next to Zurich. Device fabrication will be done at cleanroom facilities at the Center for Micro- and Nanofabrication (ETH Zürich, www.first.ethz.ch) and at the Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center located at IBM Zürich laboratories (www.brnc.ethz.ch). Empa offers a highly stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a broad interdisciplinary surrounding. The work will be carried out under direct supervision of Dr. Ivan Shorubalko, the head of the thesis Prof. Dr. Michel Calame, and in a close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Maksym Kovalenko. The position is funded for up to 4 years, the foreseen starting date is as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
