The Laboratory for Particles-Biology Interactions is offering

Two PhD Student Positions within the research topic “Nanoparticles-Biobarriers Inter-actions”


The Particles@Barriers group seeks to acquire a mechanistic understanding on the interaction of particulate materials with biological barriers. In particular, we are interested in the correlation of physicochemical particle properties with barrier translocation and biological effects in order to support the safe design of particles and the development of novel particle-based therapeutic concepts.


In a first project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, you will explore direct and indirect adverse effects of industrially and medically-relevant nanomaterials at the human placental barrier using advanced in vitro and ex vivo placenta models. The project is carried out under the supervision of Dr. T. Bürki and is in collaboration with the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen (KSSG) and the University of Geneva.


In the second project, carried out under the joint supervision of Dr. T. Bürki (Particles@Barriers) and Dr. Guiseppino Fortunato (Biomimetic Membranes and Textiles), you will develop novel ultrapermeable and/or responsive membranes for nanoparticle transport studies across biological tissue barriers.


You will have the opportunity to work in a very interdisciplinary, dynamic environment at the forefront of the field.


Your tasks
  • Develop and carry out a research project in the field of nanoparticles-biobarriers interactions with appropriate support from our team
  • Leverage the synergies of the interdisciplinary project at the interface of materials science and biology by being in constant exchange with our collaboration Partners.
  • Publish results in high impact journals and present your work at international conferences.

Your Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Biology, Biomedical engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Life Sciences or related subject. Previous experience with advanced cell cultures, nanosafety assessment and/or material science/ biomedical engineering is a benefit.
  • You are passionate for science and driven by scientific curiosity. You are eager to learn new things and tackle new challenges.
  • You like working in a multidisciplinary team and have exceptional communication skills. Good command of English is a must.

You can expect significant support and guidance from established scientists during the whole of your project. The work will be carried out at Empa St. Gallen. The position is available upon Agreement.
