Our research group in the field of Management Information Systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik) is looking for a new PhD student starting in mid 2020. We are located at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics (MTEC) at ETH Zurich.
This is a joint offering between the Chair of Management information Systems and AMAG.
The AMAG Group and their 6500 employees are passionate about providing individual mobility in Switzerland. With the core brands Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, AMAG has a market share of approx. 30%. The headquarters of AMAG are in Cham near the beautiful Lake Zug.
Electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity are changing our individual mobility. Data and its analysis with machine learning und artificial intelligence play a key role in this transformation. AMAG has a unique data treasure in the ecosystem of individual mobility, with data from vehicles, aftersales, used cars, leasing, rental cars and car sharing. This makes AMAG the perfect place for applied data science. The new AMAG department „Data & Advanced Analytics“ with their data scientists is raising this data treasure – using machine learning and artificial intelligence.
We offer a highly interesting research agenda in close collaboration with practice. Different from a PhD in pure computer science or Mathematics, our work is more applied as we tailor advanced analytics to the specific requirements of the use cases in practice. Especially this PhD position is designed to “get your hands dirty”: In strong partnership with AMAG, your goal is to make the benefits of AI and statistical modelling tangible along the value chain of AMAG.
Due to the special set up of the PhD, which is in close collaboration with industry, your work time will be split: 60% at ETH, 40% at the site of the industrial partner (Cham). Your ETH office is located at the heart of Zurich - most likely Europe's most compelling place to live. You will work with a highly motivated team of young researchers. The salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and according to ETH standards. Your company office is - at least to 40% - located in Cham where you will work with a highly motivated team of experienced data scientists, mostly with PhD.
The close collaboration with a company enables you to directly test and thus validate and verify your research in a real-world environment. It also enables you with unprecedented and unrestricted access to actual data.
In the past, the usual length for a PhD degree has been around 3-4 years, for which funding is guaranteed. Publications which show the results of your actual implementation are the prime outcome that will lead to your doctoral degree.
A tentative PhD candidate will be interested in one (or more) of the following topics:
For PhDs toegether with partners from practice, it is of utmost importance, that the research is centred around the applicability and usefulness of research results with impact to business practices.
The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in either Maths, Physics, Computer Science, Social Sciences or Econometrics. Interested candidates should be interested in solving analytical tasks, combined with intermediate programming skills (e.g. in R, or Python). Prior experience in corresponding software frameworks is a plus (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Stan, pyro).
Fluency German language is a plus.
Industrial experience for example in a whole sales company or experience in a consulting company is advantageous.
Your work at ETH is almost entirely research-centred without the usual teaching duties, whereas your work at the industrial partner is almost entirely application-centred. Hence, you need to be able to program and implement your research ideas by yourself.
Applications from female applicants are especially welcomed.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents: CV and transcripts. Cover letter of references are not needed. Please note that your application may be shared with AMAG. We exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. Please state a tentative starting date.
