Job description

Objectives and description

The ELEVATE project “EarLy dEtection of cerVical cAncer in hard-to-reach populations of women through portable and point-of-care HPV Testing” aims to improve the adequacy and coverage of cervical cancer screening. The ELEVATE team will develop a new technology for a point-of-care, portable, low-cost, user-friendly, HPV testing device, to be used in “hard-to-reach" populations in Europe and Latin America. This project brings together a multidisciplinary team of physicists, electronic engineers, biochemists, biologists and medical practitioners to solve fundamental problems associated with the development of such device.

The PhD project aims at the development of a proteomic electrochemical sensor for the detection of two disease-specific biomarkers, for a reliable identification of HPV transforming infections associated with cancer progression. Electrochemical sensors are known to be powerful tools for the fast detection of biomolecules in fluids, and are becoming of critical importance in, among other application fields, clinical analysis and diagnostics. In addition, the attachment of bioactive proteins to surfaces underpins the development of novel, rapid and inexpensive biosensors that can improve and/or complement the current clinical care settings.

The final platform will include chemical and biosensors integrated into a microfluidic system for the detection of relevant analytes in HPV. Sensors will be made of electrochemical cells on inexpensive and robust substrates, fabricated mainly through screen-printing technologies. Bio-functionalisation will be performed for the selective detection of the biomarkers.

The project is funded by the European Commission and will be performed in close collaboration between Ghent University research groups and other European and Latin American academic and industrial researchers. The selected candidate will have the unique opportunity to be involved in the early stage development of a novel PoC tool for cervical cancer diagnostic.

Position summary

With focus on biosensor development, the role of the candidate will involve:

  • Antibody immobilization/testing, optimising experimental conditions to ensure optimal assay performance;
  • Testing assay performance in different materials and surfaces;
  • Development of novel assay format to increase performance and reproducibility;
  • Data collection and analysis. Interact with a large technically diverse team of scientists and engineers to integrate and optimize biosensors for reliable operation with minimal user intervention.

Profile of the candidate

  • Doctoral position with a competitive PhD grant (generally up to 4 years).
  • Access to state-of-the-art fabrication and evaluation tools and facilities at Ghent University.
  • Training opportunities (e.g. soft skills training, seminars and courses) for scientific and personal development.
  • The candidate will be directly involved in an international research group that works together as a team and will have the possibility to collaborate with other active researchers at Ghent University, and at partners of the EC funded project ELEVATE.
  • The research group is situated in Ghent (Technologiepark), a lively city at the heart of Europe (https://visit.gent.be/en/HOME).
  • Starting date: as soon as possible, but flexible.

How to apply

Please send your CV, containing possible publications, preferably names and contact information of 1 or 2 referees, and a motivation letter to Prof. Jan Vanfleteren (Jan.Vanfleteren@ugent.be), before 25/11/2018. Early application is encouraged as the applications are processed upon reception.
