Doctoral student in applied electrochemistry

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemical engineering

Hydrogen is an important component in a future energy system. The only large scale, fossil-free production method for hydrogen today is electrolysis, with electricity from renewable sources as sun, wind and hydropower. Usually water is oxidized to oxygen gas at the anode, but the electrical energy consumption for hydrogen production can be reduced by half if instead alcohols are oxidized. New electrocatalytic materials with high activity and high selectivity for the desired reactions are needed for such a process to become viable. In this project, financed by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, we will explore new electrode materials for oxidation of low cost alcohols. Researchers at Stockholm University will design and produce new materials, which will be investigated by electrochemical methods at KTH. Relevant industry is represented in a project reference group.

The doctoral student we will be working at the division of applied electrochemistry (https://www.kth.se/ket/electrochem/welcome-to-the-division-of-applied-electrochemistry-1.30912), with about 25 PhD students and seniors doing research in the fields of batteries, fuel cells and electrolytic processes in an international and creative environment. The work will be mainly experimental in character and conducted in close collaboration with those active in the project and with researchers in the electrochemistry group. Questions on how the chemical composition and morphology of the electrode materials influence their activity and selectivity are in focus.
