Carbon dioxide, CO2 is the gas that contributes most to the enhanced greenhouse effect, and emissions must be reduced. Fossil-based products must be replaced, e.g. with transport fuels produced by gasification of biomass. The raw gas produced in the gasification needs to be upgraded and cleaned to avoid problems in downstream catalytic conversion steps. An attractive technical solution for reducing the number of gas cleaning steps is the use of an electrochemical molten carbonate cell which offers separation of CO2, balancing of the H2/CO ratio, internal hydrocarbon reforming and oxygen production in one and the same step. A previous conceptual study has shown positive results, but the technical possibilities for combining gasification of biomass with a molten carbonate cell must be evaluated.
In this project, the complex processes taking place in the electrochemical molten carbonate cell will be studied in detail. Tolerance levels for various pollutants, the possibility of regeneration after poisoning, the activity of the conversion of heavier hydrocarbons, kinetics and reaction mechanisms are all dependent on operating parameters and need to be evaluated. To study the various electrode processes in detail, different electrochemical techniques will be used. The measurements are made primarily in small cells in laboratory scale, including gas analysis techniques, such as MS and GC. Characterization methods such as SEM-XRD will also be used. Later also large cells may be used.
The current doctoral position is funded by the Energy Agency's biofuels program and is located at the Division of Applied Electrochemistry at the Department of Chemical Engineering. At Applied Electrochemistry, more than 20 PhD students, from a wide variety of countries, work with half a dozen senior researchers and teachers.
