Project description

Third-cycle subject: Organic Bioelectronics

Interfacing living cells with man-made electronics provides ways to stimulate and measure biological signals. Electrodes are currently used to develop bioelectronic devices for clinical settings, like pacemakers and electroencephalography. They are also a necessary tool to monitor and stimulate cells in vitro, like in patch clamp electrophysiology. In this project we aim to develop better electrode interfaces to neural cells in vitro using organic electronics. The project entails the fabrication and characterization of organic electronic devices using new organic materials and their application in contact with animal cells and human stem cell derived neural cells. We will develop new device configurations to create an intimate seamless interface between man-made electronic devices and biological electroactive systems. The experimental work will be conducted at KTH and Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. This project will be carried out within the In vitro neural systems group (www.herlandlab.com) at KTH and Karolinska Institute and will engage several other group members both other doctoral students and postdocs. The project is conducted in close collaborations with leading national and international in the field in the field.
