Third-cycle subject: Engineering Materials Science
The department for Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is looking for a doctoral student (licentiate). The research at the department is dedicated to different types of construction materials and the process-structure-property connection. This profile is also visible in the way the department is organized: the three units are Processes, Structures and Properties. As a doctoral student you will be working in a larger project within the unit of Structures and in close collaboration with Swedish industry.
The topic of the project is development of materials and optimized properties, tailored for additive manufacturing (AM). Emphasis is on tool steels which are to be exposed to extreme service conditions. Additive manufacturing is a manufacturing method where components are build up layer by layer instead of being manufactured by subtractive methods typical for conventional manufacturing methods. Powder-based feedstock is commonly used in metal AM and during the AM process, the powder particles are “glued” together by a laser or electron beam. This results in complex process conditions where the layers are melted, re-melted multiple times and then exposed to cyclic heating and cooling. This will influence the microstructure for the final component and its properties. Hence, it is important to be able to predict the microstructure evolution during printing so that appropriate materials and process conditions can be designed and controlled. In the project available and/or new computational models with be applied to predict the microstructure during an AM process. For materials data input and model validation, experimental characterization will be applied.
The student will work in an interdisciplinary environment with ingredients of physics, chemistry and material science.

Excellent English, both in written and oral communication, is required for the position. Further, knowledge and experience of modeling tools such as Thermo-Calc, DICTRA and TC-PRISMA is favorable.

Information regarding admission and employment
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
