GENERATION AND CELL BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MFP2-DEFICIENT HESC-RPE

The Laboratory for Cell Metabolism (Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences) and the Laboratory for Lipid Biochemistry and Protein Interactions (Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine) at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven, Belgium) are looking for a PhD student to contribute to a joint project funded by the KU Leuven.

Project

The general aim of the project is to study the role of peroxisomes for visual function using in vivo and in vitro approaches. The specific goal for the PhD student is to generate and characterize human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells with a peroxisomal β-oxidation defect. Besides advanced cell culture, cutting edge cell biological approaches to study redox signaling, phagocytosis and inter-organellar communication will be used.

Profile
  • You hold a Master's degree either in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Bio-engineering 
  • You have a strong theoretical background in Molecular Cell Biology
  • You have practical skills in cell culture, immunocytochemistry and microscopy
  • You work precise, and you have a critical attitude
  • You have a keen interest in cellular functioning, including organelle biology, in key processes such as phagocytosis, autophagy, redox homeostasis, and in lipid metabolism
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills in scientific English
  • You are willing to go abroad to acquire new techniques
