The Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS) PhD-Scholarship Program

The Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS) is the premier graduate programme of The National University of Singapore. NGS recognizes that solving many of the most challenging problems in science, engineering, computing and medicine requires an integrative research approach. Our PhD programmes are firmly anchored in cross-disciplinary research. NGS conducts research spanning science, engineering, computing and related aspects of medicine. Students have access to ample resources and a world-class infrastructure plus they receive supervision from top-tier scientists from NUS and research institutes under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

NGS PhD programmes are entirely student-centered. Students can select a research area of their own personal interests and devise their research projects jointly with their carefully-chosen research supervisors. This allows students to switch to a new discipline if they wish. To support their research, each student can choose their classes from a list of relevant courses. Throughout the course of their PhD, each student will have innumerable opportunities to apply their new knowledge and skills in novel and integrative ways.

NGS’4-year, research-intensive, fully-funded PhD programmes are open to outstanding bachelor and master’s degree holders with excellent research potential from all branches of life science, physical science, computer science, engineering, medicine, and interactive & digital media.

NGS’ PhD programmes are made up of the following:

1. Coursework

Composed of courses and workshops in various fields relevant to the research topic, undergraduate teaching, and research supervision.

2. Research project and thesis

Our PhD students are given guidance throughout their candidature by not only their supervisor(s), but also their thesis advisory committee. The thesis and oral examination ensure students can effectively present and discuss all aspects of their research.

3. Publication of first- or second-authored research papers in top-tier journals.

Interaction between students, faculty, and postdocs is greatly encouraged. In addition to lab work and supervisor meetings, NGS provides numerous platforms for idea exchange, presentation skills, and networking. Each year, supervisors and students will take part in poster sessions and presentation forums. An annual academic staff-student retreat and a student-organized symposium fosters a greater sense of unity between staff and students.

NUS aims to attract highly-gifted and passionate international graduates to pursue world-class, integrative research under the supervision of expert NUS researchers. Graduate students at NGS pursue research in integrative sciences and engineering, covering diverse fields across all branches of science, engineering, computing, and biomedicine. Furthermore, there are opportunities to actively collaborate with world-class researchers from renowned institutions or to spend part of their PhD candidature at world-renowned research institutes overseas.

NGS offers highly attractive PhD scholarships with a full tuition waiver (tax-free), and a monthly stipend of S$3,000 (about €1,900) for 4 years.

Apply before December 15th.
