Doctoral researcher (PhD student) in Computational Biophysics

Several PhD positions are available in the group of Prof. Jochen Hub at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany. The Saarland University is a research university of international renown, with an international campus, and with an excellent research environment for biophysics and computer science. Saarbrücken is located right in the heart of Europe, and it is the cultural center of the border region of Germany, France and Luxembourg.

Our research focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms that allow biological macromolecules to carry out their functions. Our work emphasizes biological membranes and large biomolecular complexes, and we develop simulation methods for combining experimental data with theoretical models of proteins. Our simulations are carried out on our group’s server cluster with currently 180 modern GPUs.

Our projects are embedded into collaborations to experimental groups in Paris, Munich, Göttingen, Grenoble, Glasgow, and Saarbrücken.

The future PhD fellow will investigate one of the following questions:

  • How can we combine molecular dynamics simulation and Bayesian statistics to interpret experimental data of proteins?
  • How do Viruses recognize their host cells, how may viral fusion proteins interact with membranes?
  • Can we use computer simulations and free-energy calculations for designing antimicrobial peptides?
  • How are large macromolecular complexes of the RNA replication machinery regulated?

We are looking for applicants with a Master degree in Physics, Chemistry, computational biology, or a related subject, and with enthusiasm for science. Please send your full application via Email to officehub@uni-saarland.de until October 10, 2018. Please include as a single PDF a brief cover letter (including a brief statement of motivation), a CV, all academic certificates (including all course records), the university entrance exam (according to the German Abitur), and the names of two references who are willing to write a letter of recommendation upon request.

Saarland University aims to increase the number of women in this field. Therefore, women are strongly encouraged to apply for this position. Physically handicapped persons will be preferred in case equally qualified.
