PhD Position bioremediation of contaminated shooting range soils

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland includes nine schools with more than 12,000 students. We are looking for you to join the School of Life Sciences in Muttenz, Switzerland, at the earliest possible date:

PhD Position
bioremediation of contaminated shooting range soils

Your tasks: To date, remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils still relies largely on excavation/deposition and/or metal immobilization in soils. Such approaches cannot be considered sustainable, since they have a massive impact on local ecosystems, are chemicals-/energy-intensive and metals are ultimately lost from the use circle. The main objective of the PhD position is to conduct systematic (mesocosm and continuously operated bioreactor) experiments regarding low impact bioremediation of shooting range soils that are contaminated with lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb), with the aims to selectively mobilize and recover Sb as well as to decrease bioavailable Pb. Ultimately, the PhD candidate will design and operate a mobile pilot plant. To assess the success of bioremediation, the candidate will make use of the state-of-the-art in-house analytical infrastructure (e.g. LC-qqq-ICP-MS, μXRF, LA-ICP-MS). The PhD project is conducted within the frame of a larger H2020 project, gathering the leading European and Chinese academic groups/companies active in bioremediation research. The position is fully funded (3.5 years) and initially limited to one year (1+2.5).

Your profile: You should hold an MSc degree in environmental sciences, environmental/chemical engineering, analytical/inorganic chemistry, biogeochemistry or a related field. You have excellent oral and written English skills and ideally some knowledge in metal speciation and/or the operation of continuous bioreactors. The ability to work independently and in a target-oriented manner rounds off your profile. FHNW strongly encourages applications by women.

Please submit your application before December 15, 2018 online via the following button to Karin Helbling, HR officer. For further information please contact Dr. Markus Lenz, Senior Researcher, P +41 61 228 56 86.
