JOB DESCRIPTION

PhD position in the Department of Chemistry

Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD position in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Basel.

An inherent bottleneck in development of artificial cells by bottom-up approaches is their limited composition and efficacy. The PhD project proposes the next generation of bioinspired artificial cells specifically designed to support in situ reactions, and test them both in vitro and in vivo. We aim to equip plasma membrane vesicles from donor cells with active compounds located inside smaller, nanometer-size compartments, and provide conditions for cascade reactions between these catalytic compartments. The PhD will combine nanoscience with physical chemistry and biochemistry methods to generate and characterize synthetic compartments equipped with biomolecules (enzymes, proteins, mimics), and transfer them inside plasma membrane vesicles in order to obtain the artificial cells. Artificial cells will be tested in vitro in tissue-culture models and finally, in vivo in vertebrate animal models systems (i.e. zebrafish). This joint project is an interdisciplinary project between the Palivan and Meier research groups in the Department of Chemistry. For more information on the topics of the group with which you will work, see: http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~palivan/http://www.chemie.unibas.ch/~meier/

Your profile:

- you have an MS degree in chemistry, biochemistry or material science.

- knowledge of physical chemistry methods (e.g. IR and electronic spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, NMR, FCS, light /neutron scattering)

- experience with enzymatic kinetics and cells assays desirable

- citizenship of Switzerland or one EU country

- proficiency in English, and preferably German

- great social and communication skills for integration into an international research team

Application:

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Cornelia Palivan, (Cornelia.Palivan@unibas.ch, phone: +41.61.2073839) and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Meier, (Wolfgang.Meier@unibas.ch, phone: +41.61.2073802). Interested candidates will send, by 25.11.2018: i. letter of motivation, ii. curriculum vitae, and iii. names and contact details for two referees.
