The Department of Chemistry, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking for 

Doctoral student, chemistry, beginning October 1, 2018 or as agreed, contract length maximum of four years.

The main strength areas of the department are structural and synthetic chemistry, computational chemistry and spectroscopy, renewable natural resources and chemistry of living environment, and education in chemistry. Moreover, the department is a member of the Nanoscience Center of University of Jyväskylä, which promotes interdisciplinary research projects in nanoscience. The department has world-class laboratory infrastructure and large-scale computational resources. 

The Doctoral Student will work in the research group of professor Kari Rissanen within the Academy of Finland financed project "Haloniumsupramolecular Chemistry, New Molecular Machines and Nanoreactors". The tasks of a Doctoral student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks.

We are now looking for a highly motivated PhD student interested in the synthesis and structural characterization of novel supramolecular complexes, such as catenanes and rotaxanes constructed by halogen bonding as halonium ions (iodonium) as the halogen bond donor. The ideal candidate is expected to have, or be about to obtain, M.Sc. in organic, inorganic or supramolecular chemistry. The candidate is expected to have basic synthetic and analytical organic chemistry skills. More advanced knowledge and skills in organic synthesis, in NMR and in Mass Spectrometry fundamentals, mastering other modern analytical organic chemistry methods would be an asset. 

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. The selected person must also fulfill language requirements set for the selection of PhD students.

The job-specific salary component of a Doctoral student is based on the job demands level 1-4 (EUR 1 826,50 €/month –EUR 2 500,06 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.  

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
