Doctoral student position for Charge carrier dynamics studies in semiconductors
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for the four-year full-time doctoral student position to study Charge carrier dynamics in semiconductors. The earliest starting date is 1.9.2018. The research will be carried out in a Kvantum Institute research project headed by Doc. Satu Ojala at the Environmental and Chemical Engineering Unit, Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu in collaboration with Prof. Krisztian Kordas at the Microelectronics Research Unit, Faculty of Information Technology, University of Oulu.
Semiconducting materials are used in both photocatalytic and electronic applications basically due to the same reason – their ability to absorb photons to excite electrons from valence band to the conduction band creating electron-hole pairs that can participate in a number of different events. These are for example reduction (be the electrons) and oxidation (by the holes) of surface adsorbates or injection in a co-catalyst (metals and other semiconductors) to facilitate chemical reactions on the surface of those. Photogeneration of charge carriers also facilitates enhanced electrical conductivity, which is limited by their lifetime and recombination in the semiconductor. The project aims at finding highly active photocatalytic and photoresponsive semiconducting nanomaterials and study charge generation and recombination processes in those.
The position is supervised by Doc. Satu Ojala and Prof. Krisztian Kordas.
Requirements for a doctoral student
To successfully occupy the position of a doctoral student, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) preferably in materials science, physical chemistry, chemistry or physics. Degree must have been completed with good grades by 31.7.2018. Ability to pursue independent research and excellent writing and fluency in English is expected. The work of the candidate includes: synthesis of semiconducting nanomaterials, study of band structure and charge carrier recombination by spectroscopy techniques (e.g. UV-vis, Raman, PL, UPS, XPS) and applications of the developed nanomaterials in photochemical and photoelectric processes. Accordingly, the candidate is expected to master synthetic chemical processes, spectroscopy techniques and should have also a solid background in semiconductor physics.
The doctoral student position is intended for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, is defined as a researcher in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research activity, including the period of research training. Applicants will be either starting their doctoral training, or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled. The selected candidate will carry out his/her doctoral studies in the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission.
The salary of the selected doctoral student will be set on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance (max. 46.3 %). The total salary for these levels (before tax) currently ranges from about 2 300 to 3 600 Euros/month for full-time employment.
