A 3 year position in the area of Computational structural mechanics and metamaterials inspired by additive manufacturing (InDESTruct ESR2) leading to a PhD is available at the University of Southampton.

For 18 months of the post you will be based at Boldrewood Campus at the University of Southampton, for the other 18 months you will be based at Vestas Aircoil in Denmark. 

You will pursue research in the highly inter-disciplinary area of structural design and optimisation. This is an exciting project lying at the interface of design & optimisation, mechanics & structural vibration, mathematical modelling, and material science.  The project will focus on the structural design and optimisation of heat exchanger system.

The doctoral work will require modelling of structures for stiffness, strength and vibration in order to provide input to the structural design. Modelling of vibration in periodic structures leading to exploitation of their meta-material behavior will be sought. The structural dynamic design will also account for any possible adverse structural response due to periodicity of the structure coupled by the intrinsic disorder due to manufacturing and other imperfections. The activity will tie up smoothly with additive manufacturing of novel geometries, especially for use as structural/acoustic metamaterials. A strong background in computational structural dynamics and mathematical analysis of structural problems is desirable.

Professor Atul Bhaskar and Dr Maryam Ghandchi-Tehrani within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences are the academic supervisors. Additionally, there will be industrial co-supervisors from Vestas Aircoil.

Essential criteria

Desirable criteria:

  • A master’s degree in a numerate discipline (engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or theoretical chemistry)
  • Interest in carrying out laboratory experiments.

Applicants shall, at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate.

At the time of recruitment, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

Specific focus of this studentship, in collaboration with Vestas Aircoil, will be on experimentally quantifying the dynamic behaviour, validating structural models of the particular geometries, developing experimental methodologies and empirical quantification for the characteristics of the joints, fastenings and structural dissipation mechanisms. A background ideally with experience in experimental measurements of vibration (modal testing), structural vibration/dynamics and experience of programming in Matlab, Python or similar is desirable.

Dr Neil Ferguson and Professor Atul Bhaskar within the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment are the academic supervisors. Additionally, there will be industrial co-supervisors from Vestas Aircoil.

A 3 year position in the area of Multi-disciplinary Design Optimisation of Cellular Heat Exchangers (InDESTruct ESR1) leading to a PhD is available at the University of Southampton.

The recruited PhD student will aim to explore the multi-disciplinary performance of novel cellular heat exchanger topologies within an automated design framework. Specific focus of this studentship will be on fluid dynamic simulation and the development of a generic framework within which other performance criteria e.g. stresses, vibration response, life etc. can be assessed and optimised. The successful candidate should have an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a numerate discipline e.g. engineering, physics or applied mathematics (or equivalent), ideally with experience in computational fluid dynamics, computer aided design and experience of programming in Matlab, Python or similar.

Dr David Toal and Dr Edward Richardson within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences are the academic supervisors. Additionally, there will be industrial co-supervisors from Vestas Aircoil.
