Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track) of Ecology

Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track) of Ecology

This vacancy of Ecology enhances research on ecology of plants at the University of Turku thereby supporting the internationally high-quality, wide-ranging basic and applied research on environmental influences, biotic interactions and evolution, the approaches involving all levels of biological organization.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering invites applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Ecology. Candidates for Full Professorship / Associate professorship will have a distinguished academic career and an established international reputation in their fields, as well as an excellent publications record and success in acquiring external research funding. Preference will be given to persons already qualified for a full professor.

The successful candidate is expected to have strong research merits in ecology and evolutionary biology of plants and/or other primary producers. We expect the Professor / Associate professor to provide novel knowledge and generate innovative research on field(s) including but not limited to population and community ecology, biotic interactions and conservation issues. We expect that candidates are active members of academic networks and presume them forming societal contacts necessary for outreach and research collaboration.

The duties of the professor include conducting and supervising scientific research, teaching – including supervising Master and PhD students, staying up-to-date with the most current scientific developments in the field, and participating in societal interaction and international cooperation in the field. The professor is expected to co-operate with other research groups, to form and lead his or her own research group and to obtain external research funding at both domestic and international level.

A person selected for the post will be working in the program of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the Department of Biology, which provides an international scientific environment, performs excellently in terms of academic indicators in research and education, and holds a high profile in terms of outreach to the general public. The Department runs one B.Sc. and three M.Sc.-degree programs. The Doctoral Programme in Biology, Geography and Geology provides a supportive multidisciplinary framework for ample Ph.D. production.  Research in the Department of Biology covers organizational levels from molecules and cells to populations and ecosystems. Currently the Department has, in addition to this professorship, four more vacant professorships. There are five professors in their positions and about 100 persons in research, teaching and other positions.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.

The salary for this particular post is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel (YPJ). The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.
