PhD position on Nanoscale Thermal Management

Have you ever thought about controlling heat in a manner analogous to electricity? What if we combine Thermal Engineering and Nanotechnology for it?

The ability to manipulate heat at the nano- and micro-scale in a manner analogous to electricity would revolutionize thermal management in electro-thermal systems. For example, development of thermal switches would enable better management of thermal transients than heat sinking alone. These novel components could protect both temperature sensitive electronics from unexpected or short transient events, as well as maintain a constant skin temperature in mobile devices. Moreover, the design of high-performance thermal diodes, switches or transistors could also give rise to new forms of information processing based on heat transfer or help to harvest energy more efficiently.

The development of thermal devices has rapidly attracted lots of interest in the last few years because these thermal components show a huge potential for rich transport phenomenon. Despite this interest, the field of thermal devices is not nearly as mature as their electrical counterparts. There is a plenty of room for improvement and different approaches, like using 2D- or 1D- materials or nano-engineering methods, to achieve larger control of the material properties to develop novel thermal devices.

Job description

We are looking for a talented PhD candidate that is willing to fabricate, characterize and measure the performance of nano- and micro-scale pioneer thermal devices using top-notch equipment from the MESA+ Institute and other facilities at the University of Twente. International PhD stays at Stanford University (California, USA), Soochow University (China), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (New York, USA) or the Institute of Micro- and Nano-electronics (Madrid, Spain), among others, might be possible.

Your profile

  • A strong interest and established experience in Nanotechnology and Transport Phenomena.
  • An MSc degree in Nanoscience, Condensed Matter Physics, Applied Physics, Material Science.
  • Excellent knowledge on heat transfer, nanotechnology & electrical and thermal metrology.
  • Experiences with experimental laboratory/clean-room work and having experience using AFM is a plus.
  • Experience in fabrication and physical characterization of  nanostructures is advantageous.
  • Analytical skills for heat transfer processes and modelling of these processes (Matlab, Finite Element Modelling).

  • Critical and creative approach to the research, as well as sharp analytical skills.
  • Pro-active and result-oriented team worker in an academic environment.
  • Capability to solve problems independently, but also be able to work with interdisciplinary teams - Good communication and interpersonal skills to organize research with both academics and professionals - Good communication (verbal and writing) skills in English.
  • Interested in getting involved in educational tasks.
