PhD student – Organs-On-Chip monitoring with optical coherence tomography (4 years)

Job description

We invite you to apply if you are a biomedical engineer, applied physicist, or electrical engineer interested in optical coherence tomographic (OCT) imaging and sensing. You will be a member of the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente and you will collaborate closely with the Applied Stem Cell Technologies group and the BIOS Lab-on-a-Chip group. Your work will be part of the Netherlands Organ-on-a-chip Initiative that has been funded by an NWO Gravitation grant.

Your role will be to develop and apply OCT for the non-invasive monitoring of organs-on-chips, with a specific focus on vascularization. Besides structural imaging, you will explore several functional OCT extensions to obtain information on e.g. flow and oxygen saturation. The main focus of your work will be on OCT hardware development, experiments and signal analysis, but you will also have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with organs-on-chip development.

Your profile

  • You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher.
  • You have an MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering, with excellent analytical and experimental skills.
  • You have affinity with (biomedical) optics and photonics.
  • Experience with optical coherence tomography is an advantage.
  • You have excellent communication skills and you can employ these skills for an effective collaboration with all involved parties.
